Today purely SUCKED!!!!

Today and yesterday both purely sucked, about 3 pm or so, my son discovered that our INternet connection was down. Fine, called tech support and they helped fix it, except I could not log on! Well I refuse to live in the States and NOT have the Internet. I'm simply not haveing enough fun here to manage without it!
There must be some kind of federal law about it, if you have a computer problem that requieres backing up data as this one did, no matter how damn careful you are, some of it is going bye-bye for ever. In this case it was my assorted linx. Nema problema. My son showed me a great site that I am going to use so my linx will be backed up off someplace besides my computer. on the up side none of my pictures got lost. I've saved pictures that came from sites that have gone away forever. Since some of it is hard to obtain Balkans information this is important! Not only that, it sorts it for you by tags which is great for me I purely HATE fileing!
The downside is all that vampire stuff I looked up for the guy that does the lawn has to be searched out again. A good bit of it does cross reference with some of my other resesarch and thank God a lot of my most vital research is in my research for my book and was sucessfully saved. Some of this included complex geneological research, not easily retraced. All's well that ends well.
For the record it wasn't a software problem, it was an ethernet card that was rasjebao. Thank God that's all fixed.
My son is who fixed it btw. We'd already called out for pizza, since we had to go get the ether card we did some other shopping, and that's done.
I was going to tell you all about the cute box elder bug that has adopted my computer corner and the hijinx she was up to, but I'm tired, maybe tomorrow.

Super Gordy post!

this post was in response to a response I made in Gordy's space. I like his response, especially the hair Club for Men bit!

3.2 quake at Mt. St. Helens

Not to be a Drama Queen or anything but Mt. St. Helens has been haveing quakes daily, 10 am this morning was the latest in the seris, these seris of quakes can signify an impending eruption so if I'm on less that would be why, volcanic eruptions haven't caused problems for years but you never know whether the ash will head our way or not and how much.

And Far From the Balkans...The IRA dumps arms!

This may not mean much to other people in the Balkans blogoshere, but it means a lot to me, the Provisional IRA has ordered all units to cease from all armed actions and ti looks very much like they are going to do the decommissioning thing.
I hope and pray this doesn't cause a split in the organization as the ceasfire did. I also hope that in fact weapons will be destroyed so they don't wind up on the open market again. Both eventualities would be terrible.
I also hope it means that any criminal activities the IRA did to raise funds will now end. It's long over due.
I was very heartened to see this news. Incidentally it got coverage in the Balkans I saw a story about it on PBSBiH!
The other thing that is notable is this years monsoons in India have been rather more devastateing than usual. People really need to move further inland. I think being close to the ocean contributes heavily to the yearly toll.
There are parts of the world where you must build VERY strongly or build with grass. India is one of those places, Florida is another, and so is California.
It's been very damned hot in the Yakima Gulag. We are under a lot of drought cautions, and on top of that, a county wide burn ban. I got up to turn off some of the sprinklers for the guy that does my lawn and barely made it down the stairs because I felt faint. I only ate twice today. A cinnemon roll this morning and some TasteeBite yellow dal. I was too hot to eat. well if that makes me lose some weight, that's ok. I don't want to go anyplace in this damned heat.
it's still hot at 10 pm. I'm going to see if opening the door again helps now.
Take care dear readers, keep on visiting, get me back up to 'Flippery Fish'! I'm back down to 'Slimy Mollusc'!

Sad news from The Glory of Carniola

I want to extend my deep sympathies at this time to Micheal M. I'm sorry for your loss!

Web Cam Mostar

I love looking at the bridge, I look at it at wierd times. Sometimes it is crowded with people, sometimes empty, one time I looked at it at 1:30 am local time and saw two young lovers kissing, this was shortly after it was reopened, once I saw a man go there with a broom and sweep, at 5:00 in the morning local time. He didn't look like a city employee of some sort, just some guy looking after the bridge. The gallery is nice, it has large still views, anyway it's enjoyable, and not hard to use if you don't happen to read Bosnian. Just click on the thumbnails and there you go!

All done with Math! YEAAAAAH!!!!!

Today, I went in and did that one last problem, on the last test and it was funny, Maria sent me back the first time cuz I was simply wrong, sent me back the second time because I didn't set it up write, I am such a nit befor I have some coffee!
So I set it up right, and had the same answer so she checked it on her calculator, and it was the correct answer and set up correctly, so that is all over. I feel so liberated to be able to do this without a major struggle, without it hurting my brain or raiseing my temperature! Anyway I came home and rested, then I begzn getting rid of some of th paper that has piled up here since the last quarter, I have a HUGE garbage bag full of stuff to get rid of. I also need to call Lydia's Treasures to get the things that my son and I can't wear. Someone else may as well have those things, they are in good condition. Yesterday i finished my embroidered denim shirt and it looks super. I will start the next one soon. I will put more work on that one.
I also took the nickle plated ball chain off my necklace, it's been slowly wearing off and it looked bloody awful. I did a new necklace with bone beads that are white and two blue and white chevron beads. At least it won't slowly poison me, or leave ugly gray stuff on my neck. It looks pretty good. What I really wanted was some plain melon shaped silver beads, these will do until I find some real silver melon shaped beads.

Comment on the story of the oldest female prison inmate in the U.S. Maaan I hate old people acting like teenage drama queens! This woman damn near kills this old man, but I also can see how it happened, he was USEING her. I hate religious pimps. He was claimning to be a minister and that was his way of seeing lots of women. He should be ashamed. She should be for shooting him. I would instead have exposed him as a fraud. Well on the upside, she has complete medical care, and cleaner sourroundings than she migh have if she was at liberty. She's safe from muggers, rapeists and other religious frauds.
So many old ladies give their money to religious frauds. . .just ask any televangelist!
The man she shot was doing the same thing on a more one to one level. he sounded like a total weasel to me. She shouldn't have shot him though.
Both of them really seemed to me to be people of diminished capacity.

OK my kids are right, I'm not really an American!

table width=350 align=center border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=2>You Are 50% American
America: You don't love it or want to leave it.
But you wouldn't mind giving it an extreme make over.
On the 4th of July, you'll fly a freak flag instead...
And give Uncle Sam a sucker punch!

How American Are You?

OK some of the questions leave out stuff I do and don't like that might change the answer, I do in fact have an American flag on display in my window at all times, I think of it as my 'Soul Brother' sign.
I purchased this flag at the same time I bought my house, on the grounds that on my block, display of the American flag is customary on all national holidays where displaying a flag is customary. It has been on daily display since Sept 11,2001. I display it in a window that faces the street as flags were frequently stolen right after the attacks as they came to be in short supply.
I have never personally burned an American flag, I would leave forthwith any demonstration where this took place regardless of my feelings about the governement in the context of that protest. I DO however believe burning the flag is Constitutionally protected free speech and we are in trouble the moment it ceases to be Constitutionally protected free speech.
It seems the quiz was unfairly weighted on the flag question.
My food preferences and fashion preferences seem to mark me as 'un-American' My respect for progressive aspects of the Canadian system also.
My musical preferences as well.
I find the song 'I'm Proud to Be an American' a silly song. There is a kids camp song that I'm afraid would upset Albanians pointlessly that I won't quote here, I can't hear 'I'm Proud to Be an American' without the words of the kid's summer camp re:write echoing in my memory, it is so bad I make up new words! Sorry if that makes me a bad American and also appologies to any Albanians, I personally never met an Albanian I didn't like.
I never could resist a satire. Bad of me I know, lowbrow of me I know. sorry my bad.
I do like other patriotic songs. Hell if they'd asked about even Yankee Doodle, the answer would have been different, now there's a good old American rebel song, nearly Irish in it's sarcasm.
I vote regularly, I can count missed elections on one hand, and it was always some dramatic life circumstance that necessitated my not voteing.
I don't understand people who don't vote.
Apathy is stupid.

Best stupid joke I saw online,

Pitanje:
- "Koliko ima država u Europi?"
Odgovor:
- "Tri."
Pitanje:
- "A koje tri?"
Odgovor:
- "Europska unija, kandidati za Europsku uniju i Bosna i Hercegovina."

OK here's a translation
Question: 'How many states are there in Europe?'
Answer: 'Three'
Question: And what are those three?
Answer: 'The European Unian, candidates for the European unina and Bosnia and Hercegovina'

Treaty gives CIA powers over Irish citizens
By Dan Buckley
US INVESTIGATORS, including CIA agents, will be allowed interrogate Irish citizens on Irish soil in total secrecy, under an agreement signed between Ireland and the US last week.

Suspects will also have to give testimony and allow property to be searched and seized even if what the suspect is accused of is not a crime in Ireland.

Under 'instruments of agreement' signed last week by Justice Minister Michael McDowell, Ireland and the US pledged mutual co-operation in the investigation of criminal activity. It is primarily designed to assist America's so-called 'war on terror' in the wake of the September 11 atrocities.

The deal was condemned yesterday by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) as "an appalling signal of how the rights of Irish citizens are considered by the minister when engaging in international relations". The ICCL said it appeared to go far beyond even what has been agreed between EU countries.

On signing the agreement, the minister said that "the international community must do everything it can to combat terrorism with every means at its disposal.

"Ireland will not be found wanting," he added.

The treaty will give effect to agreements on Mutual Legal Assistance and Extradition signed by the EU and the US in June 2003. These are aimed at building on mutual assistance and extradition arrangements.

Although the Department of Justice insists that the arrangement merely updates existing agreements, it goes much further. The US may ask Irish authorities:

To track down people in Ireland.

Transfer prisoners in Irish custody to the US.

Carry out searches and seize evidence on behalf of the US Government.

It also allows US authorities access to an Irish suspect's confidential bank information. The Irish authorities must keep all these activities secret if asked to do so by the US.

The person who will request co-operation is US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, the man who, as White House counsel, instigated the notorious 'torture memo' to US President George W Bush which advised how far CIA agents could go in torturing prisoners. The person to whom the request is sent is the Minister for Justice.

About 20,000 immigrants, who have not been charged with any crime, are currently in prison in the US. In two recent US Supreme Court cases, the US Government argued that US citizens could be imprisoned indefinitely without charge if the president designated them as "enemy combatants".

ICCL director Aisling Reidy said: "An extraordinary aspect to this treaty is, despite its scope and its potential to violate basic constitutional and human rights, that all this happened without debate or transparency.

"To agree to give such powers to a government which has allowed detention of its own citizens without access to a lawyer for over a year, which has legitimised Guantanamo Bay and the interrogation techniques there, without public debate, is an appalling signal of how highly or not the rights of Irish citizens are considered by the minister when engaging in international relations."

The Department of Justice said it was wrong to say the treaty happened without debate, as the agreements update and supplement existing arrangements, and the EU-US agreement has been scrutinised by the Oireachtas four times since December 2002.

A spokesperson also rejected that the measures go beyond what was agreed between EU countries.

Legislation will be required to give effect to some elements of the Mutual Legal Assistance Instrument. The necessary provisions will be contained in the Criminal Justice (Mutual Assistance) Bill which Mr McDowell expects to publish shortly.

Thanks Metafilter!

this is just messed up and sorta sad...

ClearChannel in Ohio apparently made it's own 'pirate station'! said 'pariate station' bled into the 'real' ClearChannel station's signal with rants against 'corpaorate radio' OK how Shadowrun is this?!?!

this is just messed up!

From the August issue of the Progressive, ClearChannel made it's own fake 'pirate radio station' which would bleed into the 'real radio station.' OK I grew up seeing a LOT of wierd stuff, but this takes some kind of cake! jooooooj!

Interesting link, FYI

OK not to keep my friends here in suspense, I have one more problem in the math test, I can go back either tomorrow or Tuesday to finish off, and then it's over. They make you re-solve any you got wrong, it's a different take on testing! Before correction I had 3 out of 20 wrong, but not by much. Considering I worked all but one of them without useing a calculator I'm actually pretty happy with it!

Well in the morning I take the last math test,!

7 am tomorrow I take a math test, the last one of this class, and then my math requirement is behind me, I actually have gotten halfway good at this stuff! That is cool! Today was rough though I had 60 problems to work, and was basically at it from during class until about 8:10 in the evening until it was all done, Dimensional Analysis for Meds and had to do the problem, fill in where the medication would be in pictures of syringes. I didn't use a marker, I have some quite nice art pencils I used instead. They are erasable, so it helps. I was sooo glad to get that done, I did take the abreviations test today and I'm giveing each teacher a pencil I hacked so that it has a means for secureing it to your pocket, and an eraser. This is really better.
so now I'm embroidering a denim shirt with roses.
I guess it's probably smarter than other things I might be doing now. It's comeing out well too. I'll get a picture of it up when it's done.
I need to line up my fall classes now too. and then I'm going to go see my daughter and the grand kids. I'm going to try out the new bus that goes to her town. I've wanted there to be a bus out there for AGES! :)

Kucinich to get married soon!

I am a big fan of Kucinich, I supported him for president, one of maybe 3 people in the Gulag to be for him, I still have a Kucinich picture on my wall. I'm jealous, let's just admit it, I hope he and Ms. Harper will be very very happy, I wish them both all the best!

link to information in English about Srebenica

Thanks Skelly! I didn't even know this guy read my blog sometimes, this who links to me deal is great because I found some new cool blogs that way! Thanks Zdenka!

Is it just me or does anyone else find this disgusting?

I think the fact that war criminals get all this 'help' when nothing is done for the victims of these massacres is disgusting and contemptible.
I also think the ICTY is a sick joke for another reason, if I went out and killed someone in a horrible manner, or even in a not so horrible manner, the death penalty would be on the table. There are not that many states in the U.S. that don't have death penalty. For someone to be responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and not face hanging or electrocution or even lethal injection, well that pisses me off.
It reminds me of Vikram, the lover of the Bandit Queen when he said 'Kill one man and they will hang you, kill 20 men and they will worship you as a goddess!'
This is all too true.
I also think often of the girl who saw on the famous Srebenica video, what her tata did dureing the war, and who hasn't spoken since. She knows what her father did and so does the whole world. That has to be very painful. Talk about the sins of the fathers being visited on the children'!
I think it would be good for anyone to contemplate carefully if their deeds were on film and their children saw it, how would their children take it, still
since the fear of Hell and the love of God doesn't seem to work anymore, I wonder if these people would feel shame if their deeds on film reduced their children to speechlessness?
I want all the terrorists in the world to have to face this question too. I'm not restricting this to any particular type of rotten human being.

This lady makes some important points.

I really appreciate what this woman wrote, what she was responding to was a sickening defense of Milosevic, of a typical wierd lefty going along with righty type, that has become such an exercise in cognitive dissonance for me.

OK here's the promised rant...

OK here is my big problem with Evangelicals in Iraq. They are a further destabilization for the Christian community there. They disrupt houw Christians have lived for centuries in the Middle East, which is frankly a lot closer to the way Christians have lived since Jesus was around to show us the way in person. Hence the Evangelicals should be learning something from the Iraqi Christians, whether these folks are Catholic, Chaldean, Assyrian, or Orthodox.
It's almost like they'd like to wipe out any true sense of what the Bible is about and true Christian customs. This is because they want to stamp out all notions of Christianity not being a Western religion.
This is very wrong, to stamp out Christianity's surviveing roots.

I believe when there are no true Christians in the world, the world will be a far sorrier place than it already is.
Keep the Evangelicals out of the Middle East!

This seriously pisses me off!

I am really not happy about this, I am tired so I'll save my rant about this for tomorrow, or Sunday. Trust me rantage is soon to follow, because this is bad ans wrong and disgusting.

Volcano again

Today there was at around 5:am a 3. somthing or other earthquake at Mt. St. Helens. No eruption, but the dome is getting bigger and if it does blow that will contribute to general messyness.
It's been very hot, and my fan is dead, there hasn't been time to go fan shopping. I have to have a new fan soon, or homework will become very difficult to say the lest.
I am very close to done with this class, and actually know what I'm doing, Thank you Mr. Bill, Dungeon Dweller, Ria and Maria! and Shiela, who made it possible for me to even be good enough to be in Mr. Bills class! I will never forget any of you! love you all!

Wierdness on a local level...

Yesterday my son came home and told me that he was going to get gass at a local gas franchise, Maid O'Clover, and the place on South 5th Ave was closed at an hour they would normally be open. The big steel doors were down, AND wierder yet, there was yellow caution tape on the gas pumps!
So far, I've had the local news station on despite the fact that the local announcers basically piss me off and make me want to bitch slap them both on a regular basis, and the fact I don't care for Rush Limbaugh or Mike Savage.
This station isn't just right wing, they are right wing in an inflamatory manner. They are everything they accuse the liberals of and are a laundry for empty minds. So I listen to them only for local news.
They have been the only station to provide local news on any regular basis, of things like power failures, high winds, tornados, volcanic eruptions, flods, and earthquakes. So if somehting is going on, I put them on despite the slimyness because there are times you MUST have local news.
There has been nothing on the local station about this business with 'Maido'
I read the local newspaper, regularly and so far nothing there either. Now closeing a store that early, and putting caution tape usually means something kind of serious, and I want to know and my son wants to know.
Of course I could be in a flap for nothing, I mean it's totally possible that the place was sold. Yellow caution tape isn't just about crime scenes anymore.
It comes in several types. Caution, Caution Police Line, and in the Balkans the ever popular 'Paze Mine' to name just a few.
so who knows?
I'm just very curious at this point.

===================================================================
OK update time, the Maid O'Clover stors went bankrupt, which I knew about, and were sold, again I knew about that, but what I didn't know is that the stores were closed by the new owners who laid off all the nice people who worked at these little convenience stores! :(
I used to stop in there on my way places and get like some juice or a coffee, and my son was a very regular customer, as he bought most of his gas there, and Red Hots. That was where to get them. All those Davis High Students who made the 'Maido run' into a fine art form, like my son's friend Weasle who left class in plain view of the teacher without permission returning with a LARGE Maido milkshake! Or the time my daughter went out the window to get somthing at Maido and returned with her purchase by window, or all the other funny Maido stories, all gone, forever!
BUMMER! :(

From Slobodna Dalmacija, the explosives used in London were purchased in Montenegro

Yesterday I noted articles in various Balkans press sources that the explosives used in the London attack may have come from the Balkans. For what it's worth, the man in charge of the investigations says there is no definative information as to the source of the explosives, and that all information about them is rumor. I don't know either way but for those who don't read SD regularly here is the article that appeared today.

ISTRAŽUJEMO TRAGOM IZRAELSKIH OPTUŽBI
DA JE RAZORNO SREDSTVO ZA TERORISTIČKI UDAR
U BRITANSKOJ PRIJESTOLNICI NABAVLJENO U BEOGRADU

ZAGREB/BEOGRAD - Umirovljeni pukovnik bivše JNA dr.

Al-Qa’ida zaprijetila udarima i - Danskoj!

Bosnian remains head for burial

By AIDA CERKEZ-ROBINSON
Associated Press Writer

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Thousands lined Sarajevo's main street Saturday to watch a funeral cortege of tractor-trailer trucks transport 610 bodies to the site of a memorial for victims of Europe's worst massacre since World War II.

Weeping shattered the silence as the canvas-covered trucks trundled to the front doors of the Bosnian president's office while en route to the east Bosnian town of Srebrenica. The bodies will be buried during the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the massacre on Monday.

"My older son is on those trucks," said Sabra Mujic, 64, wiping her tears. "I'm still missing my husband and my younger son. I wish they would be here together."

Among those who paid tribute was the Bosnian Muslim member of the country's multiethnic presidency, Sulejman Tihic. Neither the Serb nor the Croat members of the presidency came to pay their respects.

Some 8,000 Muslims, mostly boys and men, were slaughtered at Srebrenica in July 1995 by Bosnian Serb soldiers who had overrun the eastern town. The killings in what was then a U.N.-protected zone came shortly before the end of the country's 1992-95 war.

The bodies were dumped in mass graves across the countryside and are still being found. Thousands are still missing.

Germany Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer on Saturday urged the detention of fugitive Bosnian Serb leaders Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic to help prevent any repeat of the massacre. The U.N. war crimes tribunal court in The Hague, Netherlands has charged the two with genocide.

Fischer said the killing was the "gruesome climax" of former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic's policy of ‘ethnic cleansing' against Muslims and Croats during the Balkan wars and must not be repeated. Milosevic is in custody and facing a trial at the tribunal.

Forensic experts have found 5,000 bodies in 60 mass graves in the area of Srebrenica. DNA sampling and other forensic methods have led to the identification of 2,079 remains. Of these, 1,327 have been buried at a cemetery for victims which is part of the memorial center placed in the Srebrenica suburb of Potocari.

About 250,000 people were killed during the country's war among Muslims, Croats and Serbs.

Of the 610 victims on the trucks Saturday, two were aged 14 and several others were over 70, said Jasmin Odobasic, member of the Muslim Commission for Missing Persons in charge of the exhumation process. The cortege began at an identification center for victims in the central town of Visoko, after family members said a final farewell — many of whom were comforted by having a corpse to bury.

"I'm sort of relieved, because I found my sons Hakija and Hazim after 10 years," said Hata Halilovic, 70, just before offering a prayer near their caskets in Visoko.

Beside Halilovic, 9-year-old Envera Hasanovic lifted her hands up to pray for her grandfather. She was born in August 1995, two months after her pregnant mother lost her husband, two brothers-in-law, and a father in Srebrenica.

"My father is still missing," she said.
===================================================================================
A personal comment, I find it distressing and sad that neither the Croat nor the Serbian members of the Presidency showed up to show their respects. it would have been a the right thing to do. Their absence bothers me very much.

Earlier today on PBSBiH

I looked at the film of the people who made the march to commemorate the eascape of the very few men who escaped the masaacre at Srebenica. It was a very touching thing. I realized some of these guys must have been really young at the time they made the first and more terrible march. There was an interview with one of the Women of Srebenica too. It brought back such sad memories to think of them. I know even ten years can't erase such horrible memories from the people who survived, all one can do is pray for their lives to be better now.
PBSBiH has a link so that you can listen to Dnevnik the news show and they have Global which is a news magazine kind of show. It's good that this is available online.
Well I better call it a night. Finished off the chapter in my math before I went out I need to do the next one, at least get a good start on it before the weekend is up.

Just got in from Grants...

While it SuX that Grants no longer is downtown where it's easy for me to get there and back on foot if need be, the new venue in the basement of an old cold storage is actually better for music than the old venue.
I no complain
The bands this year were really less 'folky' and more 'rocky' which was ok in the case of the second two bands BroKin Road which I heard at the local 4th of July thing, was good and I liked them, but I really came to see 1169 because the lead singer is a friend of mine. She's like been in Spanish with me forever and she's just cool, plus I've heard their band lot of times anyway and like them, especially their songs 'Draw the Line' 'Gingerbread House' and 'Turn Out the Light'.
Cathy was all stressed out and I think it helped to know that many friends of the band were there. The other woman singer is also good, and despite the abscence of some members of the band, they turned out a terrific performance. So now I'm looking forward to tomorrow, and hearing the other music. The lineup isn't as outrageously good as other years but it's not a total loss, Gan Ainm are back and they haven't been here in some years and Heidi Mueller who is fantastic is going to be there, and Cleopatra's Veil who do cabaret style belly danceing. Personally I don't care for the cabaret style but at least they do it well and select nice music, they also do know the correct way to door floor work, ie, 'give the orchestra the good view!' hehe if you know what I mean and I think you do! All in all not a bad night's entertainment. I dragged one of my insurance friends out and ran into two school friends from the winter quarter math class with Mr. Bill.
I wish that Grants hadn't been out of Lembeck, I was totally looking forward to some Lembeck! oh well, I just had a nice Reisling and even if I'm old enough to think $5 is a bit steep for a glass of wine, they at least poured a damn glass of wine, as in it wasn't a cheap shot. It wasn't as crazy as the night Paper Vampyres played which was fine with me. Folkies are a calmer lot by and large.

Folk Life Festival starts tonight,!

The famed Yakima Gulag Folk Life Festival starts tonight. There will be a lot of good music and I will be out late, and out early for the next two days. If you are in the near vicinity of the Yakima Gulag you should go too!

Terrorist Attack on London

As everyone knows, there was a terrorist attack on London, the news reached me when I was not exactly conscious, I was again in the situation of thinking it was a terrible bd dream and woke up to hear that it was so.
I have several things to say about the attack.

First of all my heart goes out to the people of London and of the British Isles who were just minding their own damn business and going to work. London is a world city and I know people who are frequently there, I have English friends and I have Irish friends who spend lots of time in London. So I am concerned for them. There is one of them I'm going to be in touch with to make sure she's o.k.
The places attacked are all familiar to me as I have spent time in London.

Here are some things to think about:

1. the fact the British have an excellent internal security police did not prevent it but I suspect without their internal security it might have been worse and it might have been sooner. It is a fact that the English are some of the best detectives there are and the British internal and external intelligence services are among the best in the world.

2. England itself has a LOT of these 'Islamist' extremist types, point of origin for these doctrines is in places formerly colonized by the United Kingdom, or formerly under their strong influence, and frankly the U.S. in their efforts to bring down the Soviet Union funded some of them at their outset. This was a dangerous strategy and we are now all liveing with the results.

3. On the news yesterday on NPR I heard that in Jordan, there was a council of Muslim clerics both Sunni and Shi'a, from all major schools of jurisprudence, the FIRST such conference to include both Sunni and Shi'a clerics and they roundly condemned the tendancy of people who have not taken the proper courses of study and who do NOT therefore have the authority to make fatwas makeing fatwas. A fatwa is a legal decision in Islamic jurisprudence, it's kind of like a non rabbi making a declaration of what is legal or illegal in Jewish law for just anybody to make a fatwa. Most non Muslims don't understand this I may be one of the few non Muslims to understand this. The news of this confrerence will be lost in the horror of what happened in London. That is tragic.

Because like many Christians, many Muslims are poorly educated about their own religion it is very easy for their ignorance to be taken advantage of for political reasons, as happens in the Christian world with extreme right wing fundamentalists who THINK they understand the Bible and the times of Jesus but who in fact usually don't understand these things at all. Mostly this ignorance is due to a failure (refusal?) to see that Christianity like Islam and Judaism is a religion of Middle Eastern origins.

Whenever you combine religion with ignorance you have as dangerous a combination as gasoline and a match, when you add outrage over cultural problems and even worse, outrage over economic problems, well then you have a combination as dangerous as the gasoline, the match and then lighting the match.

There has to be a special place in Hell for people who so callously exploit the ignorance and the sincere sentiments of the people who have a poor religious education,and/or a poor political education, and abuse the sincerity and the feelings of such people. That is so evil I do not have words for it and I don't give a damn what religion is involved.

I am not saying this out of any sort of appeasment mentality. I am merely stateing the causes that made such an opportunity for very evil people and I want to point out that the normal, decent community of Muslims are as disgusted as we in the West are by these horrendous attacks and by the exploitation of their religion.

There are people in that community speaking and more importanly ACTING against this.
Whatever reaction the West makes must help and foster this community and not give 'justification' for further attacks.

The first real mistake was that the West has been messing around too much in the Middle East. It was bad enough helping Israel, in a way though that to Arabs is understandable, and probably dropping support of Israel isn't going to convince anyone in the Arab world that we are anything but cowardly and not to be relied on. The Arabs generally understand loyalty and value it even when it is wrongly placed.
The mistake was to in large scale invade an Arab country, in the case of Iraq and a non Arab but Muslim country in the case of Afghanistan.

This is RADICALLY different from American involvement in Bosnia-Hercegovina or Kosovo. First of all in those cases Muslims are in those cases populations present long term within a small part of Europe.

It was a case of American and other Western power comeing to the RESCUE, and frankly not quite soon enough, but still to the rescue. This is entirely different from takeing revenge massively whether people were involved or not in the attacks on the West.

It's even radically different from any potential involvement in Darfur, where the situation is that Muslims of allegedly Arab descent are attacking and enslaveing Muslims who happen to be Black after haveing run out the very ancient community of Christians who lived there who are Black.

Incidentally Muhammed would have had nothing but disgust for this. He was not a raceist and he did not approve of attacking Christians simply for being Christians.

That said I have something to say to the terrorists:
The thing about what you see as Western corruptions are a matter of CHOICE, if you find a habit, a custom, or whatever unpleasant, reprehensible or against your convic tions, you do NOT have to do it! Western ways are NOT a matter of imposition,or compulsion, they are a matter of CHOICE. You can choose to live your way and the West can choose it's way. It's right there in the Koran, in one the verses 'There is no compulsion in religion to you your religion to us ours' It is about time you read your own Book and see that to force changes in the West is as pointless as the West forceing changes in the Middle East.

To attack the West in this way perpetuates a cycle of hate and violence that NO ONE needs or wants. Not you and not us.

It is as stupid as the Western presence in the Eastern world.
Speaking of this thing of presence where people are not comfortable, if the West is so obnoxious to you all then why are so many of you, so very many of you liveing in the United States, England, France, Spain? Germany? Holland? Should you all not live in your own countries? Some places in the Middle East approach the way of life you like go live in those places, or adapt as the Bosnian Muslims and the Kosovar Muslims did to the presence of other religions and ways of life.
This is not the same as assimilation, what this is hey here's the MAGIC WORD pay attention!

TOLERANCE

Tolerance is what I have to exercise every day when I see Christians ignorantly violateing correct Christian teaching, and correct Christian customs,
I have to do that EVERY day, and do it politely and civily besides. I recomend it as a higher and better demonstration and test of faith than takeing innocent lives, hey it's better even than takeing guilty lives!

God made life and liveing things, it is only God who has the right to take our life and if you really believe in God you would not take innocent life for any reason!
Even in the case of people who are what you consider guilty you would exercise forbearance.

Suspect arrested in the case of the explosives found at Potocari

U TUZLI PRIVEDENA JEDNA
OSOBA ZBOG SUMNJE DA JE
POVEZANA S PODMETANJEM
EKSPLOZIVA U POTOČARIMA

Sarajevo

Sarajevo, 06.07.2005.

Just for you Micheal M....

Zagreb - Croatia's tourism officials have warned tourists to stay close to the shore after several sightings of a big shark were reported in the northern Adriatic.

"Although there is no official confirmation about sharks, we recommend that bathers do not swim too far away from the coast," the Tourism and Maritime Affairs Ministry said on its website.

A shark measuring up to 4m was seen by fishermen and workers on an oil rig off the northern town of Pula on Tuesday. Another sighting, more to the south and close to the shore, was reported near the city of Rijeka.

Maritime police went out to check all the reports but did not see the shark, a ministry spokesperson said.

I guess you weren't being totally paranoid huh?

Explosives near the memorial at Potocari

U BLIZINI MEMORIJALNOG CENTRA
POTOČARI PRONAĐENO 35 KILOGRAMA
EKSPLOZIVA VELIKE RAZORNE MOĆI

Srebrenica

Banja Luka, 05.07.2005.

Police find bombs at site of Serb massacre anniversary service

MARGARET NEIGHBOUR

BOSNIAN Serb police yesterday found two large bombs near the memorial centre for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where thousands of people are due to gather next week to remember the killings.

"It was ready to detonate. All you needed to do was light a slow-burning fuse and walk away," police spokesman Radovan Pejic said. "Experts told me it would have been a huge destructive force."

The bombs contained 77lbs of explosives.

Tens of thousands of family members, foreign dignitaries and guests are expected to attend a ceremony on Monday marking the tenth anniversary of the massacre. Nearly 600 identified victims will be buried at the Potocari memorial centre.

Mr Pejic said that the police, acting on a tip from European Union peacekeepers, found the explosives yesterday morning at two locations inside a former concrete factory near the memorial centre.

"We are working on identifying and arresting the culprits," he said.

Despite the admission of guilt for the massacre by the government of Bosnia's Serb Republic, many Serbs in Bosnia and Serbia have continued questioning and downplaying the crime in which Serb forces killed up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

The massacre came in the final two months of the Bosnian war, when Serb forces brushed aside a thin UN force guarding Muslims in the "safe area" of Srebrenica. They led the men away and killed them on an industrial scale over the next seven days.

The day after the Srebrenica massacre commemoration, Serbs in the neighbouring town of Bratunac will unveil a monument to what they say are more than 3,000 Serb victims in the region, which is in the Serb Republic in the eastern part of Bosnia.

Srebrenica, mainly Muslim before the 1992-95 war, now has a Serb majority. Some Muslims have returned to the town and local officials say the security situation has been satisfactory.

This proves that there are still some very dangerous people out there who should be apprehended before they do something terrible.

Other stupid opinions of my 'favorite' defender of Milosevic..

I heard this broadcast earlier in the week and wondered when someone or other would get on this! It was really a disgusting monologue and proof of this man's sheer evilness.

I would like to say people know better but old people here listen to this show and hang on his EVERY word. He has a huge audience. Most of the time it's the 'inspirational' stories and who was married for 80 years today. That is just boring, no harm in it, but this was a real performance and I was really angry hearing this.
I am glad that FAIR is doing something about it, if you like you can do something too.. Read this and then at the end there will be a means of protesting this if you like.

Here’s a transcript of what he said, beginning about 12 minutes into a 15-minute broadcast (Audio clip):

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Winston Churchill said that the American people…he said, the American people, he said, and this is a direct quote, “We didn’t come this far because we are made of sugar candy.”

That was his response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. That we didn’t come this far because we are made of sugar candy.

And that reminder was taken seriously. And we proceeded to develop and deliver the bomb, even though roughly 150,000 men, women and children perished in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With a single blow, World War II was over.

Following New York, Sept. 11, Winston Churchill was not here to remind us that we didn’t come this far because we’re made of sugar candy.

So, following the New York disaster, we mustered our humanity.

We gave old pals a pass, even though men and money from Saudi Arabia were largely responsible for the devastation of New York and Pennsylvania and our Pentagon.

We called Saudi Arabians our partners against terrorism and we sent men with rifles into Afghanistan and Iraq, and we kept our best weapons in our silos.

Even now we’re standing there dying, daring to do nothing decisive, because we’ve declared ourselves to be better than our terrorist enemies -- more moral, more civilized.

Our image is at stake, we insist.

But we didn’t come this far because we’re made of sugar candy.

Once upon a time, we elbowed our way onto and into this continent by giving small pox infected blankets to native Americans.

Yes, that was biological warfare!

And we used every other weapon we could get our hands on to grab this land from whomever. And we grew prosperous.

And, yes, we greased the skids with the sweat of slaves.

And so it goes with most nation states, which, feeling guilty about their savage pasts, eventually civilize themselves out of business and wind up invaded, and ultimately dominated by the lean, hungry and up and coming who are not made of sugar candy.

Thanks to Austin Mayor for the link.

Justice Sandra Day-O'Conner to retire

I slept a little late and woke up to this news. This means the President will have a chance to nominate someone to teh Supreme Court.
Most people in the U.S. expected that the next new justice to retire might be Rehnquist, the Chief Justice as he's been very ill and is 80 years old.
One sad detaail of this is Justice Sandra Day-O'Conner's husband has been ill and he's been in her chambers dureing his work day. That is because he is not able to be alone dureing her work day. There is something very touching that she doesn't leave his care to others but has arranged things to be close to him and to care for him hersaelf as much as possible.
She was the first woman to be a Justice.
She's been considered a conservative justice.
She was born in El Paso, Texas but she and her husband lived in Arizona, so she's a fellow westerner.
