The Obama Cover of the New Yorker

http://www.newyorker.com/online/covers/slideshow_blittcovers

There has been such fustar about this I thought it would be interesting to link to the ACTUAL COVER!

1. I am an Obama supporter, for those of you who did not know this,
2. Obama isn't actually Muslim, just has an Arabic name. Neither his father nor step-father indoctrinated him.
3. The cover is a SATIRE, last time I checked, in the United States of America there was a First Amendment, could that have changed in my absence?

Anyway, Obama himself isn't commenting. Some people are offended, I am like 'meh!'

I kind of liked this one though, but I can see where the people in it might have been offended....

You might want to copy and paste these because I could not get to the links checking my work, don't have further time to screw around with it. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Comments:
Apparently Osama did comment yesterday by saying he found the cartoon offensive to Muslims, which was my first thought when I saw it.

@T1, Yeah, probably it probably would be given that Obama is dressed like a hodza. But the New Yorker has run covers potentially irritating or offensive to just about everyone at some point or another, remember the cover of the Hasidic Jew kissing the Black girl after the Crown Heights deal? They had a cover of an Arab or other Middle Eastern type taxi driver in a car covered with all sorts of American flags, crouched down low in the driver's seat, so potentially offensive to Muslims has been done before. I am not thrilled myself with the cover, but in a free country you get stuff like that.

He called it satire on Larry King's show, went on to talk about the first ammendment and then went on to say that the whole Obama is Muslim rumor is offensive to Muslims - which I completely agree with because the rumors are not only an attempt to portray Obama as a bad person but a smear campaign against Muslims by insinuating that it is the Muslim way to lie - and that one simple lie has many different spins that go along with it.

Here's a link to what he said on Larry King: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/15/obamas-larry-king-intervi_n_112930.html

And wow, your blog is making me miss Bosnia. Have you been eating the cevape in Sarajevo? Somewhere I have a picture of one of the famous cevapcince in Bascarsija and their menu :-)

First Samaha, thanks for reading my blog! Yes I do eat the occasional čevapi, I like them a lot, my preference is for the regular Sarajevo style of čevapi, I have tried Banjalučki and like them as well, the little feferoni are nice. I find it is cheaper to just get them on the corner of my street rather than in Baščaršija!
Burek and pita are too greasy for me, so I only get a very small portion very rarely. My first trip here, they tasted better.

My S.O. says I am correct that burek and pita don't taste the same as before!

I absolutely agree with the point both you and Obama that the rumors are done as a way to insult Muslims, and Obama both.

I find that rumor campaign very offensive.

To be ANY particular religion, you have to be raised within it! Just happening by accident of birth to have a particular sort of name, or parents of a particular religion doesn't make you a member!

We have in the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota a Muslim, his last name is Ellison or something and he has a Christian first name! I don't hear any Muslims starting rumors that this gentleman is a Christian!

Anyway what matters in the end is will Obama be a good president! I think he will be!

I understand that it's cheaper and cevape are good from just about everywhere. I don't know if I remember eating Banjalucke cevape - and have never had cevape with fafarone but I would imagine that would be delicious. I usually eat fafarone with grah.

I never liked burek or pita from the restaurants over there - I guess I was spoiled with the pita we make here. If you're ever in Chicago - let me know I'll make some sirnica and burek - word is that I make great pita.

Yes - you have to be raised in a faith to be part of that faith but not only that you have to have not converted out of it or be a self stated atheist. To some extent even converts and atheists raised within a faith would understand it's culture but you can't be a Muslim atheist or a Christian atheist or a Muslim Christian or Christian Muslim.

I saw Keith Ellison speak at the ISNA convention last year - great motivational speaker!

I have a lot of respect for Rep. Ellison!
He stands by what he believes and has made a point of showing that being Muslim is not some sort of anti-American statement! In fact there has been a Muslim presence in North America from a very early point in the history of North America, and there have as well been Americans who had a strong interest in learning about Muslims all along. I have never heard him speak, just read a few short things about him and seen him briefly on T.V. If I go to Chicago, it would be if I was on the way back to the Gulag, ne daj Bog! But if it happened, I'd let you know, so you could help me with the re-entry shock! I get culture shock in reverse! :).

Hopefully I'm going to be going to a Muslims in Early America Through the 20th Century exhibit at the DuSable Museum and will learn much more about the topic. I know the Bosnian American community is the oldest known Muslim organization in Chicago but I would like to learn more about the Muslim community in whole.
