Wednesday Wierdness
This whole thing makes me really angry, these horses were plundered, and have not even been properly cared for. They ought to be returned to Croatia. It is not right for people to make animals suffer like this.

It looks like due care was taken in this instance, so I guess the horses have to suffer because the owner hasn't broken the law in Serbia, unless there's animal cruelty statutes.

pssst! Romania IS in the E.U. ! I think it's more of a factor than the discrimination which is bad in both countries, although I have to commend the humanity of a Romanian border policeman who lent a shivering, cold Roma young man his coat.

I went to look at pictures of the horses at Yahoo! news, and while there are at least a few horses very skinny and looking bad, there are also horses which look well-fed and healthy and are running with their colts:

"A colt runs with white horses from a herd of 74 famed Lipizzaners at a farm near Novi Sad, northern Serbia, Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, where they were brought from Lipik, Croatia, in 1991 to protect them from the war that erupted after the breakup of Yugoslavia. Serbian Agriculture Minister Slobodan Milosavljevic Thursday visited the herd amid continued wrangling between Serbia and Croatia over ownership and the cost of care. The horses, made famous by Austria's famed Spanish Riding School, are known for their elegant strutting and sprightly dancing. Earlier this week, animal protection groups and media reported that many of the horses were sick and on the verge of starvation. (AP Photo/Srdjan Ilic)"

So, it makes me wonder if it is merely very advanced age (and thus dying) which is why a few look so very bad.
They do not give the ages of the horses or say how old they were when they were taken to Serbia 16 years ago. Life expectancy for horses is said to be 20-30 yrs., with the Lippizans having a higher than average span. Still, if some of those horses were 10,12,15 etc. back in 1991, they'd be very old.
They don't say if any of the original herd have died. I think it is quite a feat to have all of them living 16 yrs later. And while there may be some current neglect, they'd have to have had decent care to reach old age.
It is also very expensive to care for horses and I don't see why the Croatian government wouldn't pay something towards this.
And what about the horses bred and raised since 1991. Would they go back to Croatia too?
And those old, ill horses may not survive the trip back to Croatia.
Wish they would say how many (if any of the original herd have died), how many horses have been born since then and how old the horses are.
