About Iraq not the Balkans, just to show you the quality of debate on withdrawal from Iraq. There are some important differences between Iraq and the Balkans. The Balkans were at war and there was a long delay before a very unwilling international intervention. was made, it was the other way around in the case of Iraq. In the Balkans whether anyone likes to admit it or not, the intervention did end the worst of the violence, in Iraq, things have actually gotten worse since the invasion. The Balkans conficts did produce a refugee problem which affected neighboring nations, and the U.S. to some extent, it is NOTHING to the refugee problem that has been caused with Iraq. As well, the Balkans refugees tend to go home again, if we in the U.S. get a huge influx of refugees from Iraq, it's going to produce some big cultural changes here, and be a lot more people, who are going to stay because they won't be able to go home. Iraq is not likely to make a good recovery anytime soon. There's some hope that things will calm down in the Balkans despite the stuff going on in Kosovo. There's a lot of angry, sad and bitter people, but I think more motivation to keep the peace than in Iraq.

Comments:
You are right, there is very little to compare between Bosnia and Iraq. Although, Pax Americana - Dayton Peace Agreement divided Bosnia in - for me unnutural way - some may not agree, and I can see that they are doing (Americans) the same thing in Iraq - trying to divide the country along Shiia, Sunny Kurd lines. As for refugees from Iraq, God only knows where will those poor people find their roof. The situation in Iraq is very bad thing, let us hope we will not have to cope with Iran problem soon.

I am terrified we'll see a problem in Iran. I am here to tell you, Republicans do not know how to use military power. The last war won with a Republican admiinistration was the Civil War, aka War Between the States . Even though I think Iran is much more dangerous to the West than Iraq, I still think a war is a bad idea. Containment might work.
Division was the biggest mistake in BiH, and the division was supposed to be temporary!
Division isn't going to solve Iraq's problems. All it measn is people will be displaced, have no hope of going home, and it's yet more borders and hassle.
Right now the Iraqi refugee problem is a high rate of internal refugees, and also refugees who end up in Syria and Jordan. Both Syria and Jordan did learn from the Palestinian situation that refugees should not be long term in camps. Still there's fatigue and the Iraqis that helped the U.S. will never be safe in Iraq again, they'll have to come here and it's going to be our moral obligation. Most Americans are going to resent these people because frankly most Americans don't like or understand Arabs, and don't like or understand Muslims. Bosnia and Kosovo were total FLUKES. Most Americans would be o.k. at FIRST, but given the nature of the Iraq war, I am sure many vetrans will have Post Traumatic Stress problems and anyone they even think is Arab or Muslim is going to cause a reaction. There will probably be lots of Iraqis coming to live in smaller towns, where no one is used to Muslims and Arabs and many people are going to come in and not be properly screened. So we are going to have a certain number of people here who don't like the U.S. and who will be actively enemies of the other Iraqis. I warned all my friends to expect that outcome win or lose. THat's what happened with Vietnam. The U.S. HAD to take the boat people and some of them were more sympathetic to the North than to us. Over time that situation has calmed down, but it's been more than 20 years now. It's going to take longer with Iraqis.
