Saddam Hussein Hung for War Crimes

Saddam Hussein was hung and the news has just come on the radio. I hold no brief for the man. I think though that other war criminals ought to hang as well.

Comments:
Does anyone in US Administration remember names Mladić and Karadžić?!?!!!! They are also responsible for deaths, but are still free.
I am against death sentence in principle, so I can not say I am happy with this that happened today, on this holly day for all Muslims around the world!

I don't think this administration gives enough of a damn. True I.C.E. has busted and deported 56 war crimes suspects, that is good, but it isn't enough, I think the leaders need to be brought in and face justice.

I think the day chosen was a very bad one. Then too there is no good day to do an execution.

One thing that distressed me is that this execution has exacerbated division among Muslims of Shi'a v.s. Sunni persuasion.

Personally I am not necessarily against a death sentance for some crimes. Rape for example, because in this time with AIDS and other incurable STDs,can be a death sentance, and mass killing or heinous crimes against numbers of people and against children, war crimes I think too deserve a death sentance.

The Muslim religion has the death penalty for a number of things, including some things which are not crimes in Western society anymore.

Hanging however hasn't been used among Muslims traditionally.

The TIMEING of his execution and the manner of execution are going to cause problems for the West,so will who is responsible these are issues that I think can cause problems for a long time to come.

Quite a few people in the U.S. seem to think the execution was rushed for reasons to do with corrupt conduct of the war, and there are those who think it has a lot to do with Iran.

I do think the whole thing was done with haste, but Saddam was no angel. He was an Arab version of Milosevic. He killed large numbers of Iraqis. We will never know how many exactly.

Primarily he killed a lot of the Marsh Arabs, he drained their marshes where they lived, and there are mass graves of them. The other preople he killed were Kurds who were rebelling. The U.S. did not give help to those people despite encouraging them to rebel. This makes me ashamed as an American.

The Kurds had their land taken so did Turkomen who live in Iraq. No one talks about that. These people were gassed and bombed. They had no way to leave either.

A not so distant cousin of mine, the Scottish author, Gavin Maxwell spent a lot of time among the Marsh Arabs. He went there to get an otter as a pet, and was there long time. Gavin Maxwell wrote a book about the time he spent there.

The Marsh Arabs a basically harmless people were decimated, and the area they lived in was destroyed, it was home to many rare kinds of birds and animals, and a flyover for migratory birds. The whole thing was never really discussed in the U.S.not even to get support for the war in Iraq, because the American part in all this was so disgraceful.

I don't know whether people in Europe are aware of these events.

Basically we agree. Saddam was dictator, but so was Milošević and Pinochet and many others who were not hanged.
I oppose, and will oppose for ever the date and the hour that they had chosen for the execution. Among some Muslims that will be a reason for more hate and hate is not good thing.

We definately agree that the date and hour was all wrong. Even supporting execution in cases like his, I agree with your point there. It's like if someone got hung on Christmas or Easter or Thanksgiving here. If some foreign occupier God forbid did that, or even the Constituted government of some nation in the Christian part of the world well there'd be Hell to pay, at least I hope so.
I can think of lesser things that have caused a lot of Hell raising actually in the U.S. at least, and in the rest of the West.
You raise a valid point on the inequality of the application of consequences. Milosevic died in his sleep in his cell. Babic took his own life, Pinochet, there's a man who makes me HAVE to believe in Hell. It's always good for a laugh to fake dementia too...all deserved to hang, be shot, be beheaded, or something serious. that involved dying, but no they got away with life. and yes this will be a reason for more hate. You are right that hate is not a good thing, not good for anyone in it's vicinity.
The thing that hasn't been discussed much is how much the timeing was U.S. and how much was the choice of the current government which is a Shi'a majority government.
