U.S. Army Camel Corps Anniversary
Today is the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the U.S. Army Camel Corps, I have always really liked camels, I like their intelligence and grace and feel they get very undeserved bad press. My late step father swore he saw a white camel and her calf in the Mojave desert when he was a Boy Scout out there camping with his troop. I believe him as he had very sharp eyes.
Bacrians were used too, but most of the animals imported were Dromadaries, I personally have an old article from Harpers Magazine that has an account of their arrival in Texas.

He has a point, there's a history of using the Bactrian variety in Canada, in the Yukon.

have you read chingiz aitmatov's "The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years"?
a camel is the major minor character there and i grew pretty fond of them after reading the novel. the story is, of course, about stalin's horror years - but aitmatov started out as a vet doctor, i guess, so he's really great at depicting animals, too.

@ Veronica Khoklova, I never heard of this author so it sounds like a book I'd like to read! I've got behind on my novel reading since my time in school! Just like I have with tidying up the place!
I learned to like them because of the ones that used to be in the zoo when I was little. Their reputation for having a bad smell is not fair entirely either. They only smell bad if they are seriously dehydrated.
