Intl. troops discover large secret arms stocks in Bosnia

SARAJEVO, Aug 16 (KUNA) -- International peace keeping troops in Bosnia announced Tuesday the discovery of secret stocks of arms in a south Bosnian area amid predictions that the weapons could be remaining of Bosnia's Croats militias who were controlling the area during the last war.

The troops said in a statement that the stocks included 50 large boxes containing explosives and bombers of various sizes including the Russian model of Strela.

The boxes also contained 236 RPGs and 22 anti-tanks missiles, a dozen of missiles launching systems, 40 blaze bombers and 60 boxes of raw materials used to manufacture explosives, in addition to huge amounts of anti-aircraft missiles and bombs of various kinds and sizes.

The statement said the troops' command was amazed by the discovery for the international forces were conducting a wide-scale combing campaign in Bosnia to gather arms during the nine past years that the followed peace in the country.

It also said an investigation had already started to identify who was seizing the arms, as the Bosnian law against the ownership of such weapons.

The statement raised anxiety that the sized ammunitions might be part of illegal arms trading network in the region. (end) yr.

I couldn't help but laugh; not that this wasn't a good or important post, rather at the Gullibility of the "amazed" commands throughout the Balkans.

The arms trade is everywhere. Believe this or not, I once had a friend who tried to get met to smuggle arms out of Bosnia to support a foreign resistance group he had ties with.

This group had nothing to do with Bosnia, America or anything like that. The group is battling a corrupt "communist", opressive government.

I turned him down of course!

Oh, I left this out.

I have a good belief that international arms smugglers are purposly smuggling arms into Bosnia in order to have a "safe" place to keep them until the smugglers can figure out a way to safely get them to their buyers.

I say "safe" because if they are accidently discovered, more than likely, the arms will be classifed as "left-over" from the war in the Balkans.

I don't have any concrete proof of this but, I honeslty wouldn't be surprised. Also, SFOR, KFOR and the EU just don't have enough resources as far as HUMIT (human intelligence) is concearned to conduct a proper investigation of such things.

The usage of local authorities in an investigation would be just as futile, for corruption is rampant.

Of course, my opinion!

Well it's like the Middle East in a big way in the Balkans, the characteristic you mentioned about the Serbs, that all Serbs 'know' each other? Well the same thing is true of Croats, and Muslims! To have effective HUMINT you have to have people who can totally pass undetected, moles if you will.
The Soviets succesfully planted a LOT of moles in the U.S., while the U.S. failed in this regard pretty abysmally!Americans generally aren't flexible enough the agencies who recruit people for intelligence work seem to recruit all the wrong people from an ehtnic point of view. White blonde and blue eyed might be fine in the Diplomaticd Service ditto for Blacks but for places like the Balkans, the Middle East, the Far East these are physical types who won't pass regardless of other factors!
The people the U.S. most need to spy on whether they are in the Balkans, India, the Arab Middle East, Iran, etc simply know each other too well. I think another thing, men never can move into a foreign society as credibly as women, but women do so at the cost of the power to do much about whatever they may find out!
So the U.S. is screwed from that point of view.
I think that you are correct as to how and why weapons are moved into the Balkans. It happens my family name is an Irish last name. For a time certain groups in Ireland were trying to buy arms in Croatia and in BiH. The police DEFINATELY profiled me last time I was in Croatia! Local authorities are aware of this and not comfortable about it, nor should they be!
